5 Easy Interior Design Ideas For a Cool Home

Below are some easy, cheap interior design ideas that helped transform my bland-flat, into a stylish bachelor pad!

1. Choose a Colour Scheme

The first thing that needed to be sorted in my new flat was the colour scheme, or should I say, I needed to first introduce a colour scheme. I like my rock and metal music. I therefore like dark colours such as black, dark reds and blues. It is important when choosing a colour scheme that you choose colours one reflects your personality. In the end I went with black and dark purple.

2. Paint

Now that I had chosen my colour scheme it was time to get messy with paint. A good technique when painting the walls of a room, is to paint opposite walls the same colour, and the remaining two walls a different colour. In my case I painted two of my opposite facing walls dark purple, and the remaining two I left white. These white walls would be added to later with art and other such decoration, to give them more appeal.

3. Buy Nice Furnishings or Improve What You've Got

My flat came part furnished, it had a bed, sofa, old coffee table, wardrobes and a few storage cupboards. The sofa provided was a horrible murky brown colour, so I bought a nice big black sofa throw, which I used to cover the sofa. I bought a few dark purple cushions and "Hey Presto" a cool new sofa! I then bought some funky Dark Purple curtains that had a black swirly pattern, these matched my cushions and helped promote my colour scheme throughout the flat. As for the coffee table, wardrobes and cupboards, I simply painted them black using a paint designed for wood, then gave them a nice coat of varnish. By being a little creative you can pretty much transfer any old furnishings into wonderful new ones.

4. Decorate with Art and Personal Items

This part is fun, and again should reflect your hobbies and interests in life. As mentioned I am a huge fan of rock and metal music. To add more variation to the walls of my flat I decided to invest a little money in some Canvas Photo Prints. I chose a few of my favourite album covers, which included Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Pantera. I had my local printing company transform these images into wonderful Canvas Prints. They look great on the walls and give the place a very personal touch. I also has a few old guitars, so instead of throwing them out, I mounted one of them on the wall using a guitar holder that I bought from a local music store. Personal touches like these really add character and individuality to a home, why not experiment with what you have?

5. Lighting

I didn't technically come up with this idea myself, it was provided by a friend who creates lighting for music concerts, but I'm so glad he did because it has elevated my flat to a whole new level of cool. I bought a few free standing tall spot lamps from a local high street store. I placed these in the corners of my room and using the directional lamp heads was able to direct the light in several angles around the room. These lamps also came with dimmer controls allowing me to adjust the level of brightness omitted by each lamp head. By experimenting I was able to come up with some very relaxing and tranquil lighting settings for my flat. Using another guitar on a stand, I wrapped a few fairy-lights around the body and up the neck. What resulted was one of the most talked about features of my flat! Lighting can dramatically effect the way in which a room feels so experiment with colour and brightness to find something that suits you.

Interior Design Ideas That Save Money

If you've grown tired of your home's decor, it might be time for an interior design makeover. Don't start backing away just yet! Many homeowners hear that term and automatically think it means spending a lot of money they don't have. But this isn't necessarily the case. There are many things you can do to improve the appearance of your home, making drastic shifts in aesthetics, without breaking the bank. While hiring a professional will always make a bigger difference, it isn't always within the realm of possibility. If you want to go it alone and save some money, here are some ideas that can get you started.

Painting

Changing the color of your walls is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most dramatic ways to change your home's
interior design. Going from a light color to a dark color or vice versa can completely transform a room. Of course, painting isn't always as simple as finding a color you like and going nuts. For best results, you should make sure you choose a color that matches your furniture. If you're finding this difficult to do, consider purchasing couch covers that can change the color of your furniture. You may also want to skip painting and hang wallpaper.

Art

Don't overlook the power of art. One tasteful piece can provide a centerpiece for the room. Art is almost always used in an
interior design expert's repertoire. Don't think that this means you need an expensive painting from a local gallery. You don't even need a painting at all. Photographs, sculptures, and other interesting wall hangings can do the same thing. Find something that you are interested in and think will look good in your home. Art isn't about impressing your friends. It is about what you enjoy and the feelings it inspires.

Move your Furniture

Have you tried rearranging your room? Many a homeowner, bent on buying a new living room set, has found themselves satisfied by simply moving things around. You might be surprised at the results you get. Moving furniture around can open up space and create new ways to look at the room. If you want to get technical about it, you can look into concepts such as feng shui, which may appeal to your spiritual side.

Interior
design is only limited by your imagination. There are a million little things you can do without spending a million dollars. Get creative, and you're sure to find that transforming your home has less to do with your budget and more to do with the will to make changes.

Modern Interior Design Ideas For A Family Room

There are many different designs that are acceptable for a family room. Modern interior design ideas usually appeal to many families regarding their family rooms. Modern interior design ideas work well with a family room because usually families have modern gadgets and entertainment appliances that need to be integrated into the room.

Electrical Needs

The electrical needs of most of the gadgets and appliances feature greatly in modern interior design ideas. The reason for this is due to the fact that most entertainment methods that people have are related to electricity. Even reading a book may need the assistance of a light or lamp if there is not sufficient light from a window or the sun or if it is nighttime already.

An entertainment system needs to be plugged to a wall electrical socket to work and the modern
interior design ideas for this are to hide the wires and to make the connection as clean as possible. Some television sets are mounted on walls to make them more space efficient. Where the wires go to and from the television se should not be visible so there has to be an arrangement with the interior design with regards to how to hide the wires. Other modern interior design ideas for a family room include the placement of sofas, couches or chairs for extended stay. The family room is where many members of the family stay to relax of enjoy. Seats should be comfortable and placed in such a way that the individual likes his position in them. The kind of chairs, couches or seats in the family room should also be part of the consideration of home interior design ideas.

Another
modern interior design idea for a family room is the color scheme. The dominant color of the family room should enable the individuals in it to relax and enjoy their stay there. Wood paneling may work for a family room or plain light colored walls can also house the many different appliances and toys that may be added to the family room. Dark color schemes may not work so well for a family room as the gloomy interior may discourage a longer stay but there are also dark colors that may appeal to the individual family members.

Whichever modern interior design ideas appeal to the family, the important thing is to make accommodations for the gadgets and appliances that are to be placed here. It may also be good to note that books might also part and parcel of some family rooms, so accommodations for these can also be integrated into the modern interior design ideas for the room.

Tudor And Jacobean Interior Design Ideas And Styles

Because of its reliance upon architectural features and spaces, the tudor and jacobean interior design style may not seem an obvious one to interpret in any place other than a building of the period. However, to dismiss it so lightly could be a mistake. Be prepared to be charmed by the elegance of its simplicity, by the grace of its curves and by the honesty of materials and natural colors.

It is the perfect solution for a large hallway, impressively proportioned dining room or ample bedroom (especially if you possess a grand antique or reproduction four-poster bed to form your centerpiece). A large open fireplace is a marvelous starting point that will necessitate little more to evoke this romantic theme.

Paint walls a slightly grayish, creamy-white to represent aged whitewashed plaster. Decorate with faded watercolor stenciled motifs from the period if this appeals. Alternatively, attach reproduction panels made of resin/foam in a design of the period.

Wood planking, stone flags and terracotta tiles would all be ideal floorings. However, to give a floor an instant tudor feeling, lay chunky medieval-style rush matting or one of the other natural floorings now widely available.

Wooden shutters at the windows give an authentic look, but for a more homely appearance drape a single curtain of heavy brocade or velvet from a handsomely proportioned, wooden pole and swag to one side.

Hang simple-design wrought-iron chandeliers or wall sconces and fill your room with candlelight. Another idea would be to convert a large blue-and-white jar into an electrified table lamp with a parchment shade. A similar conversion to an ecclesiastical brass candlestick would also produce an appropriate result.

To accessorize, scatter pewter drinking vessels and plates, wooden bowls and basic eating implements around the room. World trade shops may be a good source of imported items with the right basic feel.

Large blue-and-white oriental ginger jars and vases, grouped together atop a chest or table, will provide some color for your scheme.

Modem-day crewelwork fabric made in India is widely available and would make most suitable bed, window or door drapes. Textiles featuring flame stitch designs are particularly appropriate, as are velvets, brocades and leather.

Portraits of the period and naive paintings of domestic animals are now being reproduced by photographic means and finished in oil at a very reasonable cost. These will distract the eye from any lack of period architectural details and will fill your walls with interest.

Some most attractive machine-made tapestries are currently being manufactured by the meter. Backed with batons, these make ideal wall hangings. Tapestry borders are also being produced and look wonderful when used as an edging to natural floor coverings.

Trimmings are an all-important element of the style. Tassels and tasseled fringes in particular are appropriate and provide a suitable finish for upholstery.

A large rush log basket beside the fireplace will help to conjure up the period.
